Candice Levenson Heslov
Producer
1949 - 2005
Dr. Candice Levenson Heslov was a producer, writer, surgeon, wife, sister,
daughter, friend, student and colleague. Her passing is mourned by many, yet
her legacy will live on in our memories, and in the amazing work she
produced in all her fields of endeavor. Whether performing reconstructive
surgery on burn and accident victims, or writing scripts and novels, or
producing films, Candice undertook her challenges with passion, grace and a
true love of life. She lived every moment. She loved every moment.
Candice graduated from UCLA with a B.A. in Fine Arts/Painting. She continued
her education at George Washington University Medical School in Washington,
D.C., where students practiced their medical skills on members of Congress
(Candice always found this most humorous.) Candice completed her surgery
residency at Kaiser Permanente Los Angeles, and her burn reconstructive
fellowship at L.A. County/USC Medical Center. After a tenure with Long
Beach-based Harriman Jones Medical Group, Candice retired from surgery in
2003 to focus full-time on film production.
Candice wrote her first novel in 1992 and her first screenplay in 1998. In
2001, Candice wrote and co-produced her first feature length film, Par 6.
Conceived while kayaking the Kern River, Par 6 was directed by Grant Heslov,
President of Television for George Clooney's and Steven Soderbergh's
production company, Section Eight. Based on Candice's memories of her native
Texas, Par 6 is a quirky, intelligent comedy that follows one down-and-out
family's quest to fulfill their deceased father's dream of building the
world's most difficult golf course. Par 6 premiered at the Newport Beach
(CA) Film Festival in 2002.
Candice had a deep love of the ocean, living for many years on Pacific Coast
Highway in Huntington Beach, CA, with an unobstructed view of the majestic
Pacific Ocean. It was in the office of this magnificent home that PCH
Filmworks was born, the name inspired by the famous highway that stretches
much of the length of the California coastline. There is perhaps no greater
creative inspiration than a sunny afternoon spent listening to the sound of
the waves, the spray catching your face.
Candice was an athlete, fencing, kayaking, cycling, skiing and perhaps most
importantly, walking her dog, Charlie, whenever she had the chance. Candice
loved good food and fine wines. She was always reading and watched loads of
films. She never stopped studying, never stopped learning.
Candice is survived by her husband, Steve Heslov, also a surgeon. Steve was
Candice's greatest fan, and always, always, supported her dreams.
Candice will be greatly missed. In continuing PCH Filmworks, Kathy and Randy
strive to do justice to Candice's legacy. To produce films that touch and
entertain. To remember all things human, and to value each moment as though
it might be the last.
Rest in peace, dear friend.
